International Society of Nephrology

International Society of Nephrology is an international body representing specialists in nephrology (kidney diseases). Its headquarters are located in Brussels, Belgium.

In 1997 the society formed a task force to provide emergency dialysis services in areas struck by disasters (usually earthquakes), where numerous victims may develop acute renal failure due to crush syndrome. Supported by Médecins Sans Frontières, industry sponsons and professional associations, the Renal Disaster Relief Task Force sends renal nurses, technicians and doctors to the affected area. Since its establishment, it has assisted in a number of major earthquakes in several countries.

Approximately 10,000 doctors from all over the world helped create its content.[citation needed] All articles are updated periodically through a publication system designed specifically for the eMedicine site. It is read by doctors and medical students from approximately 120 countries.[citation needed] Updating occurs regularly as new advancements in medicine occur, and the date of the most recent update is published on each chapter.
